Since Windsor is the birthplace of hockey, shouldn't you visit the hockey museum? Knowing I was standing on [the] birthplace of hockey and where it began [for] our national sport was awesome. A sign on the side of a building in Windsor Nova Scotia claimed to be the birthplace of Hockey. They claim to be birth house of hockey and I have no reason to doubt that.

Thus, England became the first country with a national association and can rightly be considered the birthplace of modern hockey. The name hockey is derived from the English “hook” or from the ancient French “hoquet” (shepherd’s club; curved stick). Long before the modern version in 3000 BC, in Ancient China, Persia and India, various games of stickball were played, involving physically strong players.
During the Middle Ages, the ball was thrown with a stick in the British Isles, but also on other continents, because the United Kingdom’s navy allowed it. In 1832, field hockey became a recommended sport at Eton College in England and was proposed as a compulsory subject for girls. In 1840 former pupils of the school in London-Blackheath formed the first ever hockey club, which was called the Blackheath Football and Hockey Club.

And so it was on that night at the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal on March 3, 1875, that two squads of nine players who were from the skating club that called the rink home, made history even if it didn't end exactly as they had anticipated. The game, organized by Halifax native James G.A. Creighton -- considered one of the fathers of hockey in Canada. Creighton reportedly asked friends back east to send him sticks, which ended up being used in that first game 142 years ago.

But letters from Darwin reveal him talking about playing the game on an iced-over pond at Shrewsbury School way back in 1825. The letter casts serious doubt on generally accepted Canadian claims that ice hockey was invented in the country and that the first proper match was played in Montreal in 1875. If that is the case, ice hockey would have been played in Britain at least 50 years earlier than the first officially recognised match in Canada, where is it now a national sport and general obsession. Jean-Patrice Martel, a member of the Society for International Hockey Research, poured fuel of the fire by claiming the early 1820s was around the time that a game recognisable as ice hockey started.

Délı̨ne (pronounced 'day-le-neh'), Northwest Territories, is known as the birthplace of hockey. The Jerry Vital Memorial Arena is more than just a place for hockey - it’s a hub for Délı̨ne First Nations to gather, play sports, drum, dance, sew, and share meals year-round. Continuing with that commitment in partnership with local government officials, Délı̨ne was chosen this year because of the Sahtu Dene, Délı̨ne First Nations’ unparalleled passion for hockey and community connection. The Jerry Vital Memorial Arena rink also serves as training ground for an annual free hockey camp led by between 1-6 NHL players to inspire the next generation of athletes, some who fly or drive in from neighbouring regions to attend.
