Britain were founding members of the International Ice Hockey Federation in 1908, and enjoyed winning their first-ever IIHF European Championships in 1910. GB’s Men’s Ice Hockey Team won bronze at the 1924 Olympics, followed by a gold in the 1936 Games. That changed somewhat in 2018 when Team GB reached the pinnacle and were able to compete in the Ice Hockey World Championships. Their 2019 appearance was the first time that Team GB have competed in the competition since 1994. The British women's national ice hockey team was founded in 1989 and competed in the IIHF European Championships until 1996. Whilst the team is yet to qualify for the Olympics, the number of British female players has nearly doubled since 2011 to 889 eligible players as of 2019.

Though sports like football, rugby and cricket dominate the back pages and highlight shows today, hockey is a hugely popular pastime for many people of various ages. The history of hockey in the UK dates back to the 19th century and is believed to have originated in England. In 1875, the Hockey Association was formed in England, becoming the world’s first governing body for the sport. The association standardised the rules and regulations, which helped to popularise the game and establish it as a competitive sport. The game continued to grow in popularity, and in 1908, hockey was included in the Olympic Games held in London, further boosting its profile. The history of hockey in the UK is a testament to the sport’s enduring popularity and its ability to bring people together through a shared love for the game.

Hockey is a big deal in England, as evidenced by the existence of the England Hockey League, the pinnacle of club hockey in England. The league sits above the eight Area Leagues and has three tiers – Premier Division; Division One - North and South; Conference – East, Midlands, North, West. 144 teams and approximately 3200 players and 250 umpires and officials participate in the league. The winner of the league qualifies for the EuroHockey League in the following season.
