The Arizona Coyotes and British forward Liam Kirk have agreed to terms on an entry-level contract three years after he became the first player born and trained in England to be drafted, his agent and Ice Hockey UK said Friday. The 21-year-old Kirk was the joint top goal scorer at the recent world championships in Latvia, where he had seven goals in as many games for Britain. Kirk's agent, Dan Milstein, tweeted that Kirk agreed to terms on a three-year entry-level deal. The Coyotes selected the 6-foot left winger in the seventh round of the 2018 NHL draft, taking him with the 189th overall pick.

Teenager Liam Kirk is on course to be the first UK-born and trained ice hockey player to star in North America’s National Hockey League. Only two Brits, Tony Hand and Colin Shields were drafted in recent memory. Neither made it to the top. Around 25 NHL scouts flew across the pond to watch Liam play last season.

The records show that 51 NHL players were born in the United Kingdom and had significant degrees of success in the league. Of these 51 players, three were born in Wales with five coming from Northern Ireland, 21 from Scotland, and 22 from England. There’s no doubt that Great Britain isn’t anywhere near a hockey power, but this list proves that UK-born players have had their fair share of success in the NHL over the years.

Liam Steele is simply not spoken about in hockey circles in the UK or elsewhere. Also on that list? Liam Steele. The former Guildford Firekings junior is listed as a ‘C’ prospect and that rating is for potential fourth-, fifth- or sixth-round selections. It is slightly bewildering how the UK hockey scene isn’t excited about a young Brit, albeit a dual national, who is ranked so highly on the NHL Central Scouting list. Liam Steele is the real deal and is a player that fans both sides of the ocean should be keeping a keen eye on. NHL scouts are doing just that.

Whether anyone from the UK will gain that opportunity again, I think it’s going to be tough and that’s down to the way our league is designed now. The only way it’s going to happen is more players coming through at the top level. There is a heavy influx of imports that restricts those opportunities. If the Elite League looks more at giving young players a chance and develop them, then hopefully that would be the case. Only one other Brit – Belfast Giants’ Colin Shields – has been drafted to the NHL when Philadelphia Flyers picked him up in 2000.
